The plan to set aside this week to practice in-class worked well. Students received credit each day based on the notes they turned in at the end of each class. We reviewed past actual ISTEP math questions and practiced:
understanding what the questions was actually about
finding the relevant information on the reference sheet
writing down all the steps in an organized fashion
checking our work and
placing the answer in the answer blank
We also practiced working independently, deciding which part of a question to work with first, and we discussed how to handle test anxiety.
We will not cover new material next week because of ISTEP exams and we will have odd class schedules on most of the days, too. Tests don't start until Tuesday so we'll do one more review day. Then, when classes meet we'll update our folders, try some interesting math puzzles and games, and we may watch a DVD on the tunnel of Samos.

Prealgebra & 7th grade, Monday 2/22
We will spend this week reviewing specific math items and practicing explaining our work so that we can do well on next week's ISTEP. If students cooperate during class, there will be no homework until after ISTEP is done next week. I will record grades based on in-class participation.
Algebra, Mon 2/22
We continued to take notes on our "two trains left the station" types of problems. We completed notes on all three types. We will be spending time this week on this subject and we will also spend time reviewing math topics and specific skills so that we can do a good job on the ISTEP next week. If students cooperate and participate well in class, there will not be homework until after ISTEP.
Reminder -- tutoring tomorrow in dedicated to adding, subtracting and naming polynomials -- students are included if they did poorly on the recent quiz on this topic.

Prealgebra & 7th grade, Friday, 2/19
We dedicated today's class to working independently on various types of math problems. I will assign grades according to what was completed correctly in class. There is NO ASSIGNMENT over the weekend.
Next week we will focus on specific algebra topics and I'll include a review of math transformations as a "break" from time to time. this will likely be some of the more challenging items that we cover all year, but I hope to present them in a way that students will understand and be able to assimilate.
For 7th grade classes, there was an EXTRA CREDIT assignment available.

we completed our quiz on polynomials -- adding four items to the six that were assigned last night. Many students did not do well and I have assigned them to tutoring next Tuesday 3:20 - 4:00 for some extra help on this topic.
We spent the rest of the period taking notes on those fabulous "two trains left the station" problems. We'll finish our notes on Monday and then dive right into solving some of them!! In the meantiime -- there is NO NEW ASSIGNMENT.

7th grade, thursday 2/18
We did several things today. We started with an interesting activity on divergent thinking (what can you do with a brick -- we got many curious answers).
then we asked students what they already knew about math transformations. I thought that students probably already know a lot on this topic and I was correct. I'll use this information, along with what the state says they need to know about them, to prepare one or two brief lessons to close the gap on this topic.
We finished with an activity on Pythagorean Theorem problems, including the hard ones (word problems) and the hardest one -- using a pythagorean theorem problem inside another pythagorean theorem problem. I think we are done learning about this topic -- but we probably need to have a quiz soon and do some more practice on the word problems. there was NO ASSIGNMENT.

Prealgebra, Thus 2/18
We did some multi-tasking today: 7 students completed the geometry constructions by hand. I believe everyone is now done with this task -- I will be entering grades on it today.
All students (but one) needed more practice working with the Pythagorean theorem -- they received some review instruction and an additional worksheet to complete. Most did this during class, working in small groups. if not, IT IS DUE TOMORROW: Practice 3-9.
We also discussed divergent thinking (interesting activity on the uses of a brick) and we worked through a 2-D to 3-D Pythagorean theorem problem as a class.

Algebra, thus, 2/18
The class had a second good day of focusing and staying involved in the learning process. We hope to keep this up -- I think everyone appreciated it -- I certainly did.
today we reviewed the first polynomial assignment. Students who didn't complete it or were absent should substitute the even items, 1-33 on p. 459.
We did a pre-view of our next items -- multiplying, factoring and dividing polynomials with monomials.
THE ASSIGNMENT is to complete the first 6 items of a quiz (the last 4 will be shared in class tomorrow): Page 461, 56 - 61
Reminder to those few students who attended tutoring on Tues with the goal of improving their recent test score: your re-work is due tomorrow.

7th grade classes, Wed, 2/17
we seem to have an early case of spring fever -- many students are not even trying their assignments. this is definitely not OK and minor incident reports are encouraging them to get back on track.
Today we reviewed parts of the last two assignments and collected both from students who had completed them. All the others need to finish them and turn them in tomorrow for partial credit. These assignments were
a handout with word problems : practice 2-7
a handout with pythagorean problems: practice 11-2
there is NO NEW ASSIGNMENT.

we did geometry constructions -- on line at www.mathsnet.net and by hand in small groups.
this included making a copy of a line segment, bisecting a line segment, copying an angle and bisecting an angle -- just using a straight edge and a compass the way Pythagoreas did.
about 1/2 the class didn't get a chance to work in small groups (by hand) yet.
THE ASSIGNMENT is to complete just items 2, 3, and 4 on the back side of the problem solving handout (practice 2-7).

7th grade, Tuesday 2/16
We reviewed the Pythagorean Theorem and practiced working problems.
We also learned about the converse of the pythagorean theorem and used it to discover some pythagorean triples. The ASSIGNMENT is to finish items on the handout -- Practice 11-2, #1,2,4,6,10,12,13,14,15,16,and 17. For #17 students should make a sketch to see where the right triangle is.

Prealgebra, Tuesday, 2/16
we started with a review of what students remembered about the Pythagorean Theorem. Then we spent the rest of the class time working with Pythagorean Theorem problems (handout, practice 11-2). I believe everyone completed them in class. If not, that is THE ASSIGNMENT.
We ended by enjoying Darth Vader teaching the Pythagorean theorem (on youtube.com).

Algebra, Tues 2/16
Not our best day, I'm afraid. Only 3 students had actually tried the modest assignment -- which was 8 exercises that were all review. We started our new unit on polynomials by asking what we already knew about them. All we knew was that the word roots mean "many numbers". We determined that we needed to know what they are, how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them and to also learn how they are useful. However, students mostly didn't focus on the class learning activities -- which build on a review of like terms.
I asked, I waited, I asked again, I handed out minor incident reports. We were not in "learning mode" today. Therefore, THE ASSIGNMENT is to write a paragraph, using complete sentences, on "How I will succeed in algebra class". Those who think they are already using successful habits should enumerate them. Those who think they should modify their classroom behavior should outline these changes. I told students that, depending on the quality of their paragraphs, I may have them signed by parents. We generally waste at least 1/2 of our class period waiting for students to settle down and get back on-task. It is not everyone, but it is too many of them. I'm tired of it.

7th grade, thursday, 2/11
yesterday we reviewed several topics in class -- working with the coordinate plane, using square roots and solving proportions. Then we received a handout on word problems and were asked to try 4 of them, using the thinking block method.
Today we started by creating a list of things that are true about all triangles -- each class found 10 in all (but not exactly the same 10).
then we discussed a way to work with the pythagorean theorem by paying careful attention to where the hypoteneuse is. we will continue work on this on Tuesday.
We finished by reviewing our 4 word problems on the board.
THE ASSIGNMENT is to complete the word problems on the other side of the handout, Practice 2-7.
My homeroom enjoyed a popcorn party which they earned by collecting almost 1000 boxtops!!!

Prealgebra, Thursday, 2/11
Yesterday we spent time reviewing square roots and irrational numbers. today we reviewed this and then took a quick quiz on it. We discussed the Pythagorean Theorem using the following steps:
1. look at the triangle, make sure it is a right triangle.
2. see what 2 sides are provided, do you have the longest side (the hypoteneuse) or do you need to find the hypoteneuse?
3. If you have the 2 legs: you will use a squared times b squared equals x squared.
If you have the hypoteneuse and 1 leg you will use c squared minus a squared equals x squared.
boy I wish this keyboard would let me write equations better than this :)
4. the next step is to find the square root of x squared.
5. the final step is to make sure that you round the answer as requested and use the proper label for the units.
We reviewed 4 examples in class and THE ASSIGNMENT is to finish the handout: Reteach 11-2, starting with #4.

Yesterday we had our test on solving systems of equations and inequalities. The median grade was an F. I will not hand back these tests until all absent students have taken them but the grades are entered in Powerschool. Students who received a poor score can come to tutoring Tues afternoon, 3:20 - 4:00 for review and a chance to improve this score.
Today we reviewed the math puzzle I handed out after the test and we spent time reviewing exponents (Chapter 8), which we already covered in August. The ASSIGNMENT is to complete items 7 - 16 on the handout. Items 17 + are EXTRA CREDIT.
On Tuesday, we begin our last major topic -- polynomials (Chapter 9). Usually, this is students' favorite topic of the year.

7th grade, Tues 2/9
We spent the last two days of class in the computer lab, working on our problem-solving skills at www.mathplayground.com. Students worked individually on modeling math problems with thinking blocks, which is a part of the Singapore math program. Students received credit for their effort on this activity. They got to spend the last 5 minutes enjoying the same website's fabulous math games area. This is a great website!
Prealgebra, Tues 2/9
We had 7 students absent from class today. We completed a review on Chapter 1 (in class) and we practiced Singapore math multiplying and dividing -- we are good at it.
For the rest of this week -- we will focus on the pythagorean theorem and continue to review earlier math skills.

Algebra, Tuesday 2/9
we reviewed solving systems of equations in class today and there was a study session in my class from 3:20 - 4:00. Several students made good use of the study session. I will also be at school early tomorrow -- if you have a last minute question, feel free to come to my class before school. I will also be available by phone at home tonight if you get "stuck" while studying. It is better to figure it out BEFORE the test.
The good news is -- our next topic will probably be your favorite one of the year (if past years' students are any indicator)!!

Algebra, Friday 2/5 - Wed 2/10
We reviewed the handout on systems of inequalities, updated our folders, and set priorities for our review of the entire topic (solving systems of equations and inequalities).
There will be no class on Monday (2 hour delay)
On Tuesday, we'll review all five topics, but with the following emphasis:
1. solve by substitution
2. solve by graphing
3. write systems of equations/inequalities from word problems
4. solve systems of inequalities
5. solve by elimination
Before Tuesday, it would be wise to review the chapter review section in the book, starting on p. 387. We will also dedicate the math tutoring session on Tuesday afternoon (3:20 - 4:00) to additional review.
the test is scheduled for Wednesday. Students will be permitted to bring 1 page of notes to refer to during the test.

7th grade, Wed 2/3
We reviewed our singapore/1-step equation handout. we are making great progress -- I think the Singapore triangle method helps.
We also spent time on www.mathplayground.com doing set #3 of problem-solving with thinking blocks.
Hey, guess what? Mr. Duey commented on yesterday's blog -- cool!
There is NO ASSIGNMENT.
All work turned in today (including in academic detention) will be credited before progress reports are printed on Friday.

7th grade, tuesday 2/2
we started with a review of fraction operations -- boy did we forget a lot in the last few weeks!
to reinforce, we watched Mr. Duey's fraction rap at www.teachertube.com. Students who want to learn this rap can get extra credit!!
We checked our assignment and turned it in, then we got a NEW ASSIGNMENT -- a handout that has singapore math triangles at the top and solving one-step equations at the bottom.
Any missing assignments must be turned in tomorrow in order to get credit -- progress reports will be generated on Friday and all missing work will be "zeroed out" on Thursday.

Prealgebra & 7th grade, Mon 2/1
We worked some more on our Singapore math as a way to solve equations. There was good participation in class and it seems to be working so far.
THE ASSIGNMENT is to complete the handout (both sides) on order of operations and numbers and expressions which was distributed in class.
Students were also given missing assignment lists -- these must be turned in by the close of school on Wednesday to obtain credit.

we started with a quick review of some exponent rules, then we discussed the correct answers to the assignment on conditional statements and counterexamples. We also reviewed all 4 types of "solve systems by elimination" problems. Finally, THE ASSIGNMENT is to complete the p 21 side of the G2-3 handout (on solving multi-step equations).
There is also an EXTRA CREDIT assignment available -- any of the exercises on multiplying matrices found in the text on p. 361 -- due by Friday for credit.
I think we are ready for a quiz on solving by elimination :) Readers of the blog will have an edge, I guess.
