The plan to set aside this week to practice in-class worked well. Students received credit each day based on the notes they turned in at the end of each class. We reviewed past actual ISTEP math questions and practiced:
understanding what the questions was actually about
finding the relevant information on the reference sheet
writing down all the steps in an organized fashion
checking our work and
placing the answer in the answer blank
We also practiced working independently, deciding which part of a question to work with first, and we discussed how to handle test anxiety.
We will not cover new material next week because of ISTEP exams and we will have odd class schedules on most of the days, too. Tests don't start until Tuesday so we'll do one more review day. Then, when classes meet we'll update our folders, try some interesting math puzzles and games, and we may watch a DVD on the tunnel of Samos.
